Considering relocating to the Netherlands? One of the first things you may require is a local bank account.

In this tutorial, we’ll go over everything you need to know about opening a bank account in the Netherlands, including the necessary documents, how to open an account online, and which banks are ideal for expats in the Netherlands.

Can US citizens open a bank account in the Netherlands?

Foreigners can open a Dutch bank account if they live in the Netherlands, whether they own or rent a home. You’ll also be eligible if you’re studying or working, though a Dutch address is the simplest way to apply for an account.

You will also require other forms of crucial documents, which we will discuss next.

What do you need to open a bank account in the Netherlands?

The most significant documents required to open a Dutch bank account are your passport and evidence of address in the Netherlands. This might be a utility bill, a rental contract, or any other official, current document that includes your name and address.

However, many banks may request the following:

  • Proof of income, such as pay stubs or your job contract
  • Your burger service number (BSN). This is your official national identity number while in the Netherlands, similar to a social security number in the United States. You must register for your BSN within five days of arrival in the country. If you remain for less than four months, you can apply for a Dutch BSN as a non-resident.

If you are not a member of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), it can be difficult to register a business account in the Netherlands. Entrepreneurs who have already registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (Kamer van Koophandel) and obtained a residence permit can complete the Quick Scan ‘Dutch Business Bank Account’ form.⁴

Can I open a Dutch bank account online?

In the Netherlands, you can open a bank account online, however the process varies per bank.

ABN AMRO (one of the big three Dutch banks) allows you to open a bank account online using its app if you have a Dutch address, an international passport, and are required to pay taxes in the Netherlands¹. Simply download the app, take a photo of your ID, and you’ll have your account number within hours.

ING offers a similar service, but their app does not accept US passports as proof of ID². At Rabobank, you must visit a branch in person to verify your identity.

In short, you’ll need to check with each individual bank to see if you may open an account online.

Opening a bank account in person

If you are unable to open an account online with a specific bank (or prefer to do so in person), you must visit a local branch. Check to see if you will need to schedule an appointment first, and then bring your documents with you on the day.

The bank may do a credit check on you when you open an account online or in person. After the account is opened, your account information and debit card will be mailed to you within a few days.

Can I open a bank account in the Netherlands without a BSN?

Many banks will require your BSN when opening an account, but not all. ING does not require a BSN but does not accept US passports as evidence of ID⁴. You can also try a digital bank, such as Revolut or N26, which just requires identification documents to start an account.

However, if you move to the Netherlands, you will still need a BSN. You must register for your BSN within five days of relocating there, and you will need it for almost everything. This includes obtaining a driver’s license, accessing the public healthcare system, and paying Dutch taxes.
